We give an introduction to ecosystem modeling and elaborate modeling as a method. We develop conceptual models, but also formal models. Together we implement formal models in software and perform simulations with them. As an example, we deal with models that are relevant for special questions in ecosystem research. Limitations of modeling and simulations will be considered and discussed.
Objective
Students understand the basics of modeling and can apply them to ecosystems. The students know typical mathematical models for ecosystems. They can classify and evaluate complexity and simplification issues of ecosystem modeling.
Assignments / coursework according to FSA
Please note that this is a 3-SWS course with a heavy workload even outside of seminar hours. Plan your semester accordingly and free up your place for other interested parties if you can foresee that you will not be able to do so. There will be 10 days of in-presence teaching with each 94.5 minutes duration excluding breaks. Details on the scheduling within these slots will be subject to discussion at the start of the seminar.
We recommend that you work on your exam project in small groups (optimal: 2 people) and take the oral exams in this group. The exam project has be be handed on August 31 the latest.
